How to Become a Produce Market Grower Partner

A structured four-stage process designed to set the supply relationship up for long-term success from day one

We are selective about the growers we represent — because the quality and consistency of what we bring to the UK market is the foundation of everything we do. Here is exactly what the approval process involves, what we look for and what growers can expect at every stage.

A straightforward process built around fit

What the approval process is designed to achieve

The grower approval process exists for one reason — to make sure that when we represent a grower in the UK market, we can do so with genuine confidence. Confidence in their product, their standards, their operational capability and their commitment to supplying the UK market seriously and consistently.

It is not designed to be a barrier. It is designed to be a foundation — giving both sides the information they need to enter a representation relationship with clear expectations and a realistic picture of what success looks like.

Stage 1

Initial enquiry and fit assessment — understanding your product, your operation and your UK market objectives.

Stage 2

Quality, certification and capacity review — assessing whether your standards and operational capability meet UK market requirements.

Stage 3

Commercial terms and onboarding — agreeing the structure of the relationship and preparing for first supply

Stage 4

First shipment and market introduction — managing your entry into the UK market carefully and reporting back fully.

Starting the conversation

The process begins with a straightforward conversation. We want to understand what you grow, where you are based, what volumes you can supply and what you are looking to achieve in the UK market.

STAGE 1

Initial enquiry and fit assessment

At Produce Market we manage the commercial and communication layer across every stage of that journey. We do not own the logistics — but we are actively involved in coordinating, monitoring and reporting on every shipment we handle, from origin through to delivery.

We will ask about your current export markets, your certification status, your packing and logistics infrastructure and your experience supplying international buyers. We will also give you a clear and honest picture of what the UK market requires and what working with Produce Market involves.

What We Ask

Product range, growing regions, volumes, current export markets, certification status and your objectives for UK supply. We keep it focused and relevant.

What We Share

An honest overview of UK market requirements, buyer expectations, typical pricing structures and what the representation relationship involves in practice.

What Happens Next

If the initial conversation suggests a good fit we move into a more detailed assessment. If it does not we will tell you clearly and explain why — there is no ambiguity at any stage of this process.

Due diligence and assessment

If the initial conversation is positive we move into a structured review of your operation. This is the most detailed stage of the process and covers three core areas — quality standards, certification and operational capacity.

STAGE 2

Quality, certification and capacity review

Quality Standards

We review your packing standards, grading criteria, post-harvest handling and quality control processes. We look for growers who can supply to a consistent specification across shipments and seasons — not just those who can produce an impressive one-off sample.

Certification

We confirm your current certification status against UK market requirements. GlobalGAP and BRCGS are the most commonly required standards, though requirements vary by product and buyer channel. If there are certification gaps we will advise on what needs to be addressed and the realistic timeline for doing so

Operational Capacity

We assess your ability to supply commercially meaningful volumes reliably and on time. That means reviewing your packing and cold storage infrastructure, your export logistics capability and your experience managing international shipments to demanding buyer timelines.

Getting the relationship right from the start

Once we are satisfied that there is a strong operational and commercial fit we move into agreeing the terms of the representation arrangement. This stage is about getting the foundations right so that the relationship works smoothly from day one.

STAGE 3

Commercial terms and onboarding

Once we are satisfied that there is a strong operational and commercial fit we move into agreeing the terms of the representation arrangement. This stage is about getting the foundations right so that the relationship works smoothly from day one.

Commission Structure

We confirm the representation commission rate — fixed at 8% of net sale value — and explain clearly what it covers, how it is calculated and how payments are structured and processed.

Pricing Parameters

We agree the pricing parameters we will work within on your behalf — the floor prices below which we will not sell without coming back to you first and the commercial framework that governs our pricing decisions in the UK market.

Communication Protocols

We agree how we will communicate — reporting frequency, reporting format, the escalation process for issues and the day-to-day communication structure that keeps both sides informed throughout the supply relationship.

Practical Onboarding

We handle the practical aspects of getting the relationship set up — buyer introductions, product information, packaging requirements and any administrative requirements that need to be in place before first supply begins.

Your entry into the UK market

The first shipment is the most important moment in any new supply relationship. It sets the tone, establishes buyer expectations and gives both sides a real-world test of how the supply chain performs. We manage it carefully.

Before the shipment leaves origin we confirm specification, documentation and export readiness. We brief the relevant UK buyers on the product, the origin and what to expect. We manage the arrival and quality assessment process and we report back to you fully — quality findings, buyer feedback and any commercial observations relevant to future shipments.

STAGE 4

First shipment and market introduction

Before Departure

Specification confirmed, documentation checked, export readiness verified. We brief UK buyers on your product and manage their expectations ahead of arrival.

On Arrival

Product is assessed against the agreed specification. Quality findings are documented in full and communicated to you promptly and honestly — including anything that needs to be addressed for future shipments.

After Delivery

Buyer feedback is captured and reported back to you in full. The first shipment report gives you a clear, honest picture of how your product has landed in the UK market and what the next steps look like.

ONGOING REPRESENTATION

What the relationship looks like once you are established

Once the first shipment is successfully delivered and the relationship is underway, we move into ongoing representation. This is where the real value of the model becomes clear — consistent sales management, regular market reporting, continuous quality feedback and a UK commercial partner actively working on your behalf every day.

Regular Reporting

Sales performance, pricing achieved, buyer feedback and market conditions — all reported to you regularly, clearly and honestly. You always have a complete picture of how your UK business is performing.

Continuous Improvement

Quality feedback from every shipment is fed back to you systematically. Over time this creates a continuous improvement loop that raises your product and packing standards and strengthens your position in the UK market.

Market Development

As the relationship develops we work to grow your UK presence — introducing your product to new buyers, developing new buyer relationships and identifying new commercial opportunities relevant to your product range.

Ongoing Support

We are available to you throughout the supply relationship — for commercial questions, market intelligence, issue resolution or simply a conversation about how things are going. You are never left without a clear point of contact.

Grower Approval Process FAQs

Clear answers to the most common questions about how Produce Market assesses and onboards new grower partners covering timelines, certification requirements, what we look for and what happens at every stage.

  • How long does the approval process take?

The timeline depends on your certification status and the complexity of your operation. In straightforward cases the process from initial conversation to first shipment can be completed within a few weeks. Where certification gaps need to be addressed the timeline will be longer.

    Get In Touch
  • What if I don't hold all the required certifications yet?

We will advise you clearly on what is missing and what needs to be addressed. In some cases we can begin the relationship on a limited basis while certification work is completed. We will always be honest about what is and is not possible within your current certification status.

    Certifications & Standards
  • Is there a cost involved in the approval process?

There is no charge for the assessment and onboarding process. Our commercial relationship begins when we start selling your product — at which point the 8% representation commission applies to completed sales.

  • What happens if we are not a good fit?

We will tell you clearly and explain why. It might be a timing issue, a certification gap or a product fit question. In any case we will give you honest feedback and, where possible, practical guidance on what would need to change for the relationship to work in the future.

    Get In Touch
  • Can I go through the process for multiple product lines?

Yes. We assess each product line on its own merits — certification requirements, quality standards and market fit can vary significantly between products. We will advise you on the strongest opportunities within your range and how to sequence the introduction of different product lines into the UK market.

  • What do I need to prepare before getting in touch?

t helps to have a clear picture of your product range, your current certifications, your export volumes and your UK market objectives before the initial conversation. But do not wait until everything is perfect — the initial conversation is exploratory and we are happy to work through the details together.

  • Do you visit growers at origin?

Where the relationship and the commercial scale justify it we are open to origin visits. For most new relationships the initial assessment is conducted remotely — through documentation, samples and structured conversations. Origin visits become more relevant as the relationship develops and volumes grow.

  • What makes a grower application unsuccessful?

The most common reasons are insufficient certification, inability to supply consistent volumes, product that does not suit current UK market demand or an operation that is not yet ready for the demands of international export supply. We will always explain our assessment clearly and give you actionable feedback
